Ruben Amorim has endured a challenging start to his tenure at Manchester United, winning just 10 of his first 21 games in charge. There is clearly a need for reinforcements, but the club will not have an unlimited budget to spend in the upcoming transfer window. Selling and loaning out players will be key to funding new signings, with several players expected to leave at the end of the season. However, the club have already begun planning potential summer deals.
One player who has been regularly linked with Manchester United is Amorim’s former pupil Geovany Quenda, who has been outstanding for Sporting CP this season.
Amorim has brought Quenda into the Portuguese club’s first team, and the youngster has quickly become one of the team’s brightest stars.
Despite the Portuguese coach promising not to touch the Sporting squad in the January transfer window, he is certain to be open to signing Quenda this summer.
Amid reports that personal terms have been agreed for a potential move, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Amorim has given the green light for the move to go through.
The Italian journalist wrote in his GiveMeSport newsletter: “Quenda is definitely on the list. He has been on the list for weeks, even months. That has not changed. There is no agreement yet, but he is a player that Amorim has personally approved.”
Quenda has a release clause in his contract with Sporting, believed to be in excess of £80m, but a deal could be struck for less than that.
Quenda, who came through the youth system at Sporting Lisbon, has quickly made a strong impression under the guidance of coach Ruben Amorim. With the ability to play flexibly in both full-back and winger positions, Quenda is considered the ideal piece to strengthen Man Utd’s attack, which has been struggling this season.
In the 2023/24 season, Quenda has made great strides, scoring 2 goals and contributing 7 assists in 38 appearances for Sporting Lisbon. His strengths are speed, skillful individual technique and creativity in playing style. If he joins Old Trafford, Quenda may have the opportunity to reunite with coach Amorim, who understands his potential.
Currently, Man Utd are focusing on negotiating with Sporting Lisbon to complete this deal. The good relationship between the two clubs, demonstrated through the deals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, is expected to help the deal go smoothly.
In the context of Man Utd still facing many difficulties and not finding a solution for their inconsistent performance, this deal could bring a breath of fresh air. Despite investing heavily in the transfer window, the “Red Devils” have not achieved the expected results in both the Premier League and the continental arena.
